So, what the devil is going on with The Honorable Thing? It’s been three years since this work began, why isn’t it ready for press? Several reasons, of course. Mostly because the writing took a long time to be done.
Pass 1, consisting of agglomeration of all the writings to date, was completed on December 9, 2014. At the time, the manuscript amassed 221 thousand words, about 976 pages. I felt that such a huge work could not readily be edited using just Word. So I imported it into Scrivener.
Scrivener is a great piece of software. Lots of bells and whistles. So distracting! The learning curve consumed some time, as well as ‘parting’ out the MSS into ‘scenes’, so I could easily cut, paste, move, or delete scenes.
Then I was ready for Pass 2, where I flensed the blubber out of the novel. That completed in January, 2015. The work is now about 106 thousand, with about 20k more to cut from it.
I wanted to get a sense of how things are, so I have sent it out to Alpha Readers. Feedback is coming in, and it has some commonalities for fixes. Pass 3 should begin around mid-March. I will keep you posted.
